About Us

Located in central St Leonards on Sea directly across from the beach, the studio opened in October 2021 as a new creative space where people of all abilities can learn, develop, share, and explore working with clay.

The studio is well equipped for wheel throwing and hand building; 10 shimpo wheels, hand building equipment, tools, extruder, numerous glazes and slips, most of which are made in the studio.

All students and members are encouraged to nurture their skills and improve their techniques from our experienced teachers, guest potters, and workshops. Everyone will have the opportunity to join open studio events to sell their work.

Our work extends into the community, offering workshops and taster sessions, partnering with other community organisations and local businesses.

Courses and membership

Throughout the year you can join any one of our courses that typically run for an average of 10 weeks and suitable for all levels of experience.

We have 8 dedicated wheel throwing classes and 3 hand building classes per week.  We encourage students to join the courses to learn the basic techniques and foundations of throwing, handing building and glazing, all of which we recommend a minimum of 1 year before advancing onto becoming a member if you are new to the studio.

Students are provided the opportunity to continue working in their classes or can join one of intermediate and advanced classes or join the the studio as a member. We welcome members who have a strong foundation and understanding of their making and glazing. We will assist to develop their individual projects and nurture relationships with other makers and artists, including connections with local outlets selling ceramics.

Short courses, workshops and taster sessions

Taster sessions will run continuously throughout the year, they include wheel throwing and hand building and one-off sessions exploring a different technique or focusing on a specific method.

Ceramic workshops include wheel throwing, hand building and other practical ceramics seminars to existing and new students providing them the time to focus and improve their skills or just have fun working with clay for the first time, they are taught by one our teachers or a guest potter.

New workshops are being developed each year and previous sessions have included: Throwing Bigger, Throwing Closed Forms, Hand Build Contemporary Amphoras, Christmas Decorations, Porcelain Paper Clay, Paper Clay Lanterns, Electric Kiln Training, Nerkiomi, Kurinuki, and Raku.

Raku and alternative firings will be coming soon.

Sessions are designed specifically for age ranges to include adults, young people and families, please see age suitability for each session or course.

The assistants support with the day-to-day tasks like recycling clay, making glazes and slips, and packing kilns. Studio assistants receive 3 hours of tuition in exchange for 3 hours of studio work. We accept applicants from currently enrolled students and members as well as those who might be interested in ceramics or those who are currently studying or recently left higher education.

Guest potters and residencies

All of our sessions are taught by local teachers who have many years of experience in their practice. The studio embraces cross disciplinary ways of learning and will host guest potters, artists, and makers. We welcome residential potters who wish to exchange ideas and practices from around the world and would like to use our studio. We would love to hear from you if you wish to be guest teacher or potter.
