Ceramic Whistles with Emma Carlow

This workshop is suitable adults and children (11yrs+).

Join Emma Carlow for a half-day workshop inspired by her exploration of folk-art whistles. Emma will share her practice and lead a workshop, where we will be hand building folk art inspired bird whistles. The whistles will be built using buff stoneware clay, embellished with pattern and texture, before adding colour with underglazes. During the workshop you will be able to make two whistles that will be left for drying and firing, and can be picked up in a few weeks' time.

Emma’s work draws inspiration from folk art around the globe, celebrating the craftsmanship of everyday objects used in various cultural celebrations and rituals. Emma also has a deep passion for toys, exploring how they represent our identity and world.

Emma shows her work regularly, both in solo and group exhibitions. Her work has sold internationally through the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal West of England Academy. She has created product lines for many museums including Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, Pollocks Toy Museum and The Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

All of the tools, equipment, clay, glazes and firings are included in the price.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:

Bring a small hand towel and apron and any additional tools you wish to use.

Lunch is not provided but there are several cafes and restaurants in the area. The beach is located directly across from the studio and if the weather is suitable is a perfect spot to have lunch and a swim in the sea.

Please ensure you can attend the workshop you have booked as we cannot offer refunds less than 14 days notice, unless we are able to fill your place with another student. Please get in touch and we will do our best.
