Porcelain Paper Clay
2 Day workshop
Date: Saturday 8 & Sunday 9th August
Time: 10am-4pm
Teacher: Lucy Cobb
Fee: £225.00
Suitable for beginners and all levels of experience and adults ages 18+
We’re delighted to welcome back Lucy Cobb to teach this exciting two-day Porcelain Paper Clay workshop. Made with organic flax fibres blended into the clay body, paper clay is perfect for modelling and sculptural work. One of its greatest strengths is its versatility as it can be worked wet, leather-hard, or even bone-dry, creating a diverse way of working with clay.
Techniques explored will include:
Taking casts of found organic materials by dipping or painting porcelain paper clay slip directly onto surfaces
Pouring and painting paper clay slip onto plaster bats, moulds, balloons, or paper/cardboard forms
Pressing organic materials into slip layers to create imprints or “ghost images” that remain after firing
Cutting, tearing, sewing, and joining wet, leather-hard, and dry paper clay sheets to form larger sculptural works
Oxides added to the slip or wedged into the clay body to introduce colour
Pieces will be single fired and without the use of glaze; instead, colour and surface effects will be achieved through slips and oxides during the making process. The firing and porcelain paper clay slip and clay are included in the workshop fee.
If possible, please bring organic materials such as seed pods, dry seaweed, cabbage or other leaves, fine lace, origami, or textured materials made from 100% natural fibres.
Please note very waxy leaves, such as rose petals may resist the paper clays. Materials must be organic if they are to be fired, however, you can use these materials as moulds or to make impressions.
Additional organic materials will also be provided by the teacher. All clay materials and firings are included in this course.
