Wheel Throwing for Improvers
3 Day Workshop

This three-day hands-on workshop is designed for students who already have basic wheel-throwing experience and are ready to refine their skills, build confidence, and explore more advanced forms. The focus will be on improving technique, consistency, and understanding form through guided demonstrations and plenty of practice time at the wheel.

Students will work on controlling and centring clay, pulling up all the clay efficiently, and creating even, consistent walls. We will explore developing forms from cylinders, including bottle necks, galleries and lids, and jugs. The workshop will also introduce new throwing techniques for working with more clay, enabling students to create larger forms such as platters and bowls.

Emphasis will be placed on skill development rather than finished pieces. Students are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and learn through the process, with less focus on keeping every pot and more on growth through practice and letting go.

On the final day, students will trim selected pieces they wish to keep and practice complementary skills such as pulling handles and adding simple surface decoration. By the end of the workshop, participants will have strengthened their throwing fundamentals, expanded their technical range, and gained greater confidence at the wheel.

This course is for throwers with some experience and we will work to your skill level. 

Lunch is not provided so that you can explore the area and enjoy one of the fantastic restaurants or cafés nearby. Tea, coffee, biscuits and chocolates provided. The beach is located directly across from the studio for having lunch or a swim during your breaks, before or after your session.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

All of the tools, equipment, clay and decorating provided. We will be working with a stoneware buff clay fired to 1250 degrees. If you wish to fire any pieces, this will be charged at £7.00 per kilo.
