Throwing Porcelain with Tanya Gomez
2 Day Workshop
Date: Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2026
Time: 10am - 4.30pm each day, including breaks (lunch not provided)
Teacher: Tanya Gomez (guest potter)
Fee: £200.00
This course is suitable for adults 18+ and for wheel throwers with some experience.
This two-day porcelain course will give you a basic understanding of what porcelain is and allow you to experience the unique qualities of the material. By working on the wheel, you will learn how porcelain differs from stoneware and why it requires more precision and attention.
Using 400–600g of clay, we will throw a variety of forms, practicing techniques from pulling the clay up to collaring and creating spheres. On the second day, we will attempt to join two pieces together and you will have the opportunity to trim the pieces made on the previous day.
At the end of the two days, you will have learned some of the nuances of porcelain and gained experience in how to take care of it. You will have a body of work in various forms that reflect the techniques covered during the course.
Students who wish to keep work can have their pieces fired in the studio for a firing fee of £5.00 per kilo for bisque or £10.00 per kilo for glaze fire.
ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Tanya Gomez graduated from the Royal College of Art and is renowned for her vibrant large decorative vessels. She teaches from her studio in Lewes, East Sussex and exhibits throughout the UK and Internationally. She is Associated with the Craft Potters and Contemporary Applied Arts and has exhibited at Ceramic Art London and Collect.
Approach to teaching: I love to teach and have a hands-on approach, as it is one thing to see what is happening but to actually feel the clay move is vital. Everyone's style is individual and I like to find the best way for each student rather than prescribe a set of rules.
Inspiration: The Sea and the sublime experiences of its uncontrolled ever-changing condition are the fundamental of my work. Also, techniques, glazes and colour all have a part in creating work; it has to be dynamic, sensual and tactile.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
All of the tools, equipment, clay and decorating provided (included is 5kg of clay, additional weigh and pay will apply for pieces above this weight or additional pieces at £6.00 per kilo for glazed pieces).
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
Bring a small hand towel and apron and any additional tools you wish to use.
Lunch is not provided but there are several cafes and restaurants in the area. The beach is located directly across from the studio and if the weather is suitable is a perfect spot to have lunch and a swim in the sea.
